How is the TestDaF written exam (Schriftlicher Ausdruck) graded?
The examiner assesses the text against six criteria: topic relevance, task fulfilment, writing actions, source processing, expression and comprehensibility. These map to a TestDaF level — TDN 3, TDN 4 or TDN 5. Most universities require TDN 4 in all four subtests for admission.
Which mistake costs the most points in TestDaF writing?
The most expensive mistake is missing the topic or the task: if you write past the prompt or leave out key guiding points, you are marked down regardless of how good your language is, and you often fall short of TDN 4. Isolated grammar slips cost little, as long as the text stays consistently understandable.
Do I have to describe a graph in TestDaF?
In the paper-based TestDaF, yes — the graph description is part of the writing task. This is specific to TestDaF and DSH: telc C1 Hochschule (a discursive essay) and Goethe C1 (a forum post and a formal message) do not require describing a graph.
